This year the ACLU of Montana will be celebrating our 50th Anniversary on Friday September 16, 2022. The theme for this event will be, honoring our past to build a better future. The event will be a celebration of all those that helped us get to where we are today, with eye on the future. We hope you can join us after some time apart, to celebrate 50 years of fighting for Indigenous justice, racial justice, voting rights, LGBTQ equality, marriage equality, reproductive freedom, criminal legal reform, freedom of expression, and privacy.

We are thrilled to announce we will also be honoring our 2020 Jeannette Rankin Civil Liberties Award recipients! Our two honorees this year are Ivan and Ivy MacDonald. Through their filmmaking and advocacy, these siblings are an integral part of the effort to end the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW). Their feature documentary, When They Were Here, focuses on MMIW in Montana. Through this film, Ivan and Ivy hope to bring more awareness to this issue and to ultimately influence legislative change.

Ivan also works with Indigenous people entangled in the criminal legal system and works to get people mental health care and legal support. Ivy was named a Native American Filmmaker Fellow at the 2019 Big Sky Documentary Film Festival as well as a Fourth World Media Fellow at the Seattle International Film Festival.

In 2018, we were honored to have Ivan and Ivy present their work at the ACLU Membership Conference in Washington D.C.

Because of their unwavering commitment to Indigenous justice through art, community empowerment, and advocacy, we honor these exceptional Montanans.

Please join us on Friday, September 16, at the Wilma in Missoula as we both celebrate our 50th Anniversary and recognize and honor Ivy and Ivan MacDonald.

This event is free and open to the public. RSVP is required and space is limited.

We will be offering a virtual option for those who wish to attend remotely.
