MISSOULA, Mont. – The Associated Press reported that Amy Eddy has been elected to the Montana Supreme Court. The AP also reported that voters approved Constitutional Initiative 132, also known as Montanans for Nonpartisan Courts, which enshrines nonpartisan judicial elections in the Montana Constitution.

Additionally, projections show that pro-civil liberties candidates prevailed in numerous state legislative races that the ACLU Voter Education Fund and ACLU of Montana prioritized this election cycle.

Khadija Davis, ACLU of Montana political strategist, issued the following statement:

“Montanans sent a clear message tonight: Our courts must remain independent, and justice should never be beholden to partisan politics.

In the weeks leading up to the election, the ACLU of Montana, ACLU, and ACLU Voter Education Fund reached over 250,000 voters with information about candidates’ records on key issues affecting Montanans’ rights and freedoms, and the importance of preserving nonpartisan courts.

The Montana Supreme Court has played a critical role in protecting fundamental rights, from reproductive freedom to Indigenous voting rights. Tonight’s results will help keep politics out of the court and provide a mandate from voters to candidates across the state to keep defending civil rights and liberties.”
