The ACLU of Montana is currently seeking new members for its Board of Directors!

The ACLU of Montana (ACLU-MT) is a nonprofit organization working to protect and advance civil liberties for all people across the state, with particular focus on issues including voting rights, Indigenous justice, 2S-LGBTQIA+ individuals and families, criminal legal reform, immigrants’ rights, and protecting democracy. The Board of Directors work closely with the Executive Director and other designated staff to ensure that the ACLU remains a healthy organization and meaningfully progresses towards its goals.

About the Board

The ACLU of Montana’s Board of Directors is made up of dedicated community members who are passionate about protecting Montanan’s civil rights and liberties. Our Board of Directors is a governing body, providing oversight and big-picture direction to the ACLU of Montana’s work. Board members focus on fiduciary oversight and long-term strategic planning, while staff manage and execute the organization’s daily operations and programs. Serving on the Board is an opportunity to contribute to statewide impact and develop leadership experience in a values-driven organization. The Board approaches this work with a shared commitment to the ACLU of Montana’s anti-racism and anti-colonialism values.

Qualifications and Desired Experience

The ACLU of Montana seeks individuals who share a commitment to justice, equity, and civil rights, and who reflect the diversity of the state.

We are particularly interested in candidates who:

  • Demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to the ACLU of Montana’s mission
  • Are willing to contribute time, effort, and resources to strengthen the organization
  • Bring professional or lived experience in our priority issue areas
  • Have expertise in immigration law or policy
  • Represent rural Montana, Indian Country, communities of color, or the 2S-LGBTQIA+ community, or have other expertise or lived experience relevant to ACLU-MT's priority issue areas

Board of Directors Responsibilities

The full range of Officer responsibilities can be found in the bylaws. The following list is meant to serve as a general reference for the type of legal and ethical responsibilities held by our Board of Directors to ensure the stability and organizational health of ACLU-MT.

  • Hire, support, and evaluate the Executive Director
  • Ensure compliance with governance, legal, and ethical standards
  • Ensure adequate resources
  • Manage resources effectively
  • Assess and strengthen board engagement and performance
  • Establish strategic direction and monitor progress

Individual Board Member Responsibilities

  • Know the organization’s mission, purpose, goals, policies, bylaws, programmatic work, strengths, and needs
  • Prepare for board and committee meetings
  • Serve in leadership positions or undertake special assignments from time to time as necessary
  • Follow trends in civil liberties and civil rights
  • Serve on at least one committee
  • Respond to board email requests in a timely manner
  • Foster an environment of respect and cooperation, where generative conflict and open dialogue strengthen collective understanding and decision-making

Time Commitment

  • Board members are elected to three-year terms and meet quarterly.
  • Attend four quarterly meetings. Two meetings are held in person at various locations throughout Montana, and two are held virtually via Zoom. The ACLU of Montana covers the cost of travel and lodging for in-person meetings. Failing to attend two consecutive quarterly meetings is grounds for removal.
  • Attend monthly committee meetings via Zoom. Board members engage in deeper discussion on specific issues and governance matters at these monthly meetings.

The ACLU of Montana is currently seeking new members for its Board of Directors! We are seeking passionate community members from across Montana to support the ACLU of Montana through serving as a volunteer board member of our governance team.

Interested applicants should submit a letter of interest, including their contact information, to aclu@aclumontana.org. Applications are being accepted on an ongoing basis and will be considered for current and future Board vacancies.

The ACLU of Montana strongly encourages letters of interest from individuals of color, Indigenous people, immigrants, women, people with disabilities, members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, people who have been formerly incarcerated and/or are currently under supervision, and others from underrepresented and historically marginalized communities.
