Edward Snowden blew the whistle on the NSA’s mass spying programs, sparking the biggest debate about government surveillance in decades.

Now he’s the subject of a new film by Oliver Stone, and you’re invited to a free, advance screening hosted by the ACLU of Montana on September 13, 2016. The epic story of his act of conscience and the aftermath of his disclosures makes for one of the most-discussed films of the year.

Join us for the screening, plus a Q&A with ACLU of Montana Executive Director Caitlin Borgmann, Rep. Daniel Zolnikov, and former reporter, current Helena School Board Trustee Sanjay Talwani on the First Amendment, privacy rights, and whistleblowers.

Please note: In order to prevent movie piracy, the company promoting the film has hired security personnel to check cellphones as you enter the auditorium. If you do not want to leave your cellphone with security, please leave your phone either in your car or at home. Security personnel may also use hand-held metal detectors and may ask to look inside bags and purses. This is NOT the ACLU of Montana’s policy or something we agree with. However, we have decided to move forward with the screening given the importance of issues addressed in the film.

6:00 – 7:00 Reception

7:00 – 10:00 Film followed by Q&A

About the film:

Academy Award®-winning director Oliver Stone, who brought "Platoon," "Born on the Fourth of July," "Wall Street" and "JFK" to the big screen, tackles one of the most important and fascinating true stories of the 21st century. "Snowden," the politically-charged, pulse-pounding thriller starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley, reveals the incredible untold personal story of Edward Snowden, the polarizing figure who exposed shocking illegal surveillance activities by the NSA and became one of the most wanted men in the world. He is considered a hero by some, and a traitor by others. No matter which you believe, the epic story of why he did it, who he left behind, and how he pulled it off makes for one of the most compelling films of the year.
