The text Priority Issue Area: Civil Rights overlaid on a photo of people protesting

The ACLU of Montana is dedicated to supporting everyone's basic civil rights. During the 2025 Montana legislative session, we tracked the following legislation that could impact basic civil rights:

The word OPPOSE written in white letters on a red background
SB 114, which would attack the separation of church and state in public schools, requiring Montana public schools to permanently display the Ten Commandments in every public school classroom. This law is blatantly unconstitutional and fundamentally at odds with the founding principles of our country. This bill did not make it through the 2025 legislative session, meaning it will not become law. ACLU of Montana OPPOSED this bill.

The word OPPOSE written in white letters on a red background
SB 525, which would attack the separation of church and state in public schools, allowing religious chaplains to replace trained and licensed school counselors in public schools. This bill did not make it through the 2025 legislative session, meaning it will not become law. ACLU of Montana OPPOSED this bill.
