MISSOULA – The ACLU of Montana is excited to announce that it has hired Alex Rate as its new Legal Director. Rate has been in private practice with Rate Law Office, P.C., for eight years. His practice has been dedicated to protecting the rights of individuals against corporations, insurance companies, government bureaucracies, and employers. Rate is a member of the State Bar of Montana, the U.S. District Court for the District of Montana, and the Montana Trial Lawyers Association.

Rate was born and raised in Homer, Alaska. He received his undergraduate degree in Political Science from the University of California – Berkeley, and moved to Montana with his wife in 2006. In 2009, he earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Montana School of Law and opened Rate Law Office, P.C., in Livingston, Montana.

“Alex is an experienced litigator who has represented clients in discrimination, voting rights, and other civil liberties cases,” said Caitlin Borgmann, Executive Director. “His deep commitment to social justice paired with his excellent legal skills will make him a formidable champion for Montanans' constitutional rights on behalf of the ACLU of Montana.”

Rate will be taking the place of Jim Taylor, who has been the Legal Director for the last four years. In the next few weeks, Rate will be formally appearing as counsel for the ACLU in all open and pending litigation.
