Over the past sixteen months, many Americans have grown used to the Trump administration’s racist and xenophobic immigration policies. After all, Trump’s presidential campaign was built on the promise of an unnecessary southern border wall. In Montana, we may feel insulated from those anti-immigrant policies. Nothing could be further from the truth.

On Wednesday, two Montana residents and U.S. citizens were detained and interrogated by a Border Patrol agent after he heard them speaking Spanish in a Havre gas station. The agent stated: "The reason I asked you for your ID is because I came in here, and I saw that you guys are speaking Spanish, which is very unheard of up here."
On Wednesday, August 2nd, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested Audemio Orozco-Ramirez, the victim of a sexual assault that occurred in ICE custody in October 2013. From the time of his arrest until last night, Audemio’s location was unknown. His family and lawyer did not know if he was in ICE custody in Billings or on his way to Utah for deportation. Late last night, his deportation order was temporarily blocked – giving an intermediary sense of justice for Audemio and his family.

On Saturday, March 4, over 120 people gathered at the Holter Museum of Art in Helena to celebrate the work of Shahid Haque-Hausrath, the award recipient. The reception was a much-needed break from news of Trump's impending Muslim Ban 2.0. Caitlin Borgmann, Judge Jeffrey Sherlock, and Wilmot Collins shared a few words about Shahid and the importance of his work.
