The ACLU is a fervently nonpartisan organization. We don't ally ourselves with any particular political party because we stand for the principles in the Constitution.

So, while we are keenly interested in who wins elections, we don't care if you are Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Independent or any other party. If you're a candidate or an elected official, we'd love for you to stand with us for civil liberties.

On the national level, the ACLU has a fairly new website, www.aclulibertywatch.org, to provide information about the presidential race and report cards on where the candidates stand on civil liberties. We want to focus attention on this part of these candidates' platforms.

Recently the ACLU began a truck billboard campaign in the cities where Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has homes or hopes to (the White House), calling on him to return to the pro-civil liberties stance he took during previous campaigns but has abandoned during this campaign.

Likewise, the ACLU has also reported on President Barrack Obama's performance on these issues -- both the good and the bad.

No matter the candidate or the elected official, the ACLU will hold you accountable. Our mission nationally and here in Montana closely resembles the oath of office that elected officials swear to uphold: to preserve and defend our constitutional rights.

The ACLU of Montana works to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties that the Constitution and laws of the United States guarantee everyone in this country, including:

  • The First Amendment rights to freedom of speech, association and assembly, freedom of the press, and freedom of religion
  • The right to equal protection under the law and protection against unlawful discrimination
  • The right to due process and fair treatment by the government whenever the loss of your liberty or property is at stake
  • The right to privacy and freedom from unwarranted government intrusion into your personal and private affairs

We are happy to be a resource for you on civil liberties issues. Please do not hesitate to contact us for any reason.
